Chapter Sixteen

“You must be kidding.”

Clare sounds as horrified as she looks as Danica leads us into her own room, as if she thinks I’ll ruin her clothes by wearing them.

“I’ll take a shower before I change,” I offer, not sure where the words are coming from but hoping that they are the right ones to assure her that this isn’t the worst idea.

And it isn’t even my idea. I never would have asked her or Danica to borrow anything, but what other options do I have? Clare is on the shorter side, like me. She has slim, toned legs that are lean muscle, while mine are stick-thin.

I hope that now I’m on the outside, I’ll be able to exercise more and change that.

“Just a pair of jeans, and a sweatshirt. I can give her a shirt, if you’re going to be obnoxious about it.”

Clare shakes Danica’s hand from her arm and turns away. I think she’s not going to help, but as she walks off she speaks, barely loud enough for me to hear.

“Fine. Whatever.”

When I turn my gaze back to Danica, she’s pulling stuff off the large bed in the middle of the room. I can see why she thinks there’s room for me to sleep here with her. I’ve never seen a bed this big, since we all have single beds at my house. Barely big enough for one adult to fit in them.

“Sorry. I have a bad habit of throwing everything on my bed, then I have to pick it all up at night before I go to sleep.”

I nod, unsure how to respond. Everything has its place in my room, and I put everything back where it belongs right away.

Not that I have much to begin with.

“At least tonight it will be cleaned up before we’re ready to turn in, right?”

Her optimism seems genuine and not forced, and I find myself a little more confident in her presence. I can see why Taran likes her, and why Kyle would be attracted to her.

There’s something about him that is dark, like me, and I wonder if Danica knows it.

“Clare might drag her feet a bit, but she’ll be back. We can wait for your tour of the grounds, or go ahead now.”

She’s watching me, expecting an answer, but now that we’re inside her room, I’d like to take some time to get my bearings.

As if she can sense my lack of surety, she points to a corner of the room where a large, shiny dark wood desk sits with a chair in front of it, the high back and carved edges speaking to its age and value.

“Why don’t you sit for a little while? I know you’ve been sitting most of the day, but it looks like you need to take a minute. Or ten.”

She brushes off the bed, smoothing the wrinkles in the puffy blanket that covers the expanse. I wander over to the chair and sit down as I take in the rest of her room.
